PIA AIRLINE STYLES

This livery was unveiled with the induction of 747-300s in 1999. In this livery all-white fuselage was combined with enlarged green Pakistan titles and light green PIA initials in stylized Urdu script on forward fuselage. White PIA initials highlighted an all green tailfin which had a white leading edge. This livery design was applied on a very limited number of PIA aircraft. Only few months later this livery design was dis-continued and most of the aircraft painted in this livery were re-painted in 1990s livery. Boeing 747-300s continued sporting this livery design.

This livery was introduced on some of the aircraft with traditional Pakistani floral patterns, known as 'Pashmina' and 'Kashikari', painted in light green color over a dark green background of tail fin with white PIA initials, however, this floral patterns fin livery was replaced by the standard PIA fin livery a few months later. Some 747-300s were also seen with small Pakistan titles when this livery was first introduced in 1999

Old Liveries 1990s

In 1991, designed by Negus and Negus of London, PIA unveiled its sporty 90s look. Upper fuselage was in white color with titles, Pakistan International, reduced to just one word: Pakistan in green color. PIA initials in stylized Urdu were retained and were painted in grass green color on the upper fuselage of 747s and on the lower fuselage of other aircraft of the fleet. Fin livery comprised the white PIA initials on an all green fin with white color leading edge. On the lower fuselage, a broad green band covered the belly of aircraft and was cut off forward by three angled chevrons of dark green, grass green and pale blue color. The dark green chevron represented the famous PIA green and Pakistan's beauty and fertility. Sporty grass green and pale blue chevrons, a symbol of sport, highlighted PIA's sponsorship of games of every kind. No other airline in the world has supported the cause of sport and sportsmen worldwide, the way PIA has.

In 1997, to celebrate Pakistan's fifty years of independence, PIA named its aircraft after various Pakistani cities and landmarks. The names along with a specially designed logo were applied below aircraft's flight deck windows.

In Flight Entertainment

The In Fight Entertainment (IFE) system is one of the most crucial systems as far as the brand equity of an airline is concerned, since it directly impacts a passengers' comfort during long haul flights. The maintenance of these systems is becoming extremely critical as airlines strive to up the ante in order to maintain a competitive edge in the passenger transport business.

Video On Demand, Internet Access, Satellite Telephony, Interactive Games and In Flight Telephony are the value-added services that airlines are adding to their regular offering of Music and Movies on passenger seats. However this has resulted in IFE systems becoming complex and more expensive to maintain.

History of PIA Training Centre

Welcome to the PIA Training Centre, Karachi-an institution of comprehensive instruction dedicated towards imparting quality training in all the major areas associated with civil air transport. The centre is housed in a three-storied spacious building, essentially self-contained in facilities and centrally air-conditioned. It is situated about 300 yards from the Corporate Head Office building of PIA.

The prestige and esteem that the Training Centre enjoys has been a result of tireless efforts expended, since the very inception of PIA in 1956, in making the programmes of study worthy of its name. Training has been offered for PIA employees as well as for other airlines' staff intending to work, or already working as members of the cockpit and flight service crew, as passenger service and marketing staff, and as mechanics and engineers, etc. It was in 1960 that all training was amalgamated under one roof at the Hotel Midway House, Karachi. The Centre was moved to its present premises in October 1975.

Specialist instructors are assigned at the Centre for imparting rigorous training to those who fly, and to those who service and maintain various types of aircraft (B-747-200, A-310, A-300, B-737, F-27, Twin Otter, B-777). The training aids and equipment used are the latest. The methods of knowledge and skill transfer, adopted at the PIA Training Centre, are varied all pragmatic and useful. Classroom lectures are augmented by group discussion, observations, experiments, simulations, case studies, etc. Study tours to a number of PIA facilities are regularly conducted and seminars on topics of general interest are frequently convened.

Training facilities available within the airline also include flight simulators which are used in the Transition and recurrent Training of pilots and other operational crew. The equipment here includes: a cabin service procedures trainer, A310 Flight Simulator, 747-200 Flight Simulator and B743 FFS with RB211 Engines also A-310 Video & Audio Computer Based Instructions ( VACBI ) Systems. These are largely supplemented with apprentice workshops and laboratories for new entrants.

During the past, for many years the PIA Training Centre has also been instrumental in rendering training to a large number of pilots, engineers, flight stewards/stewardesses, traffic and sales personnel from over 30 airlines and associated agencies worldwide, mostly from Asian and African countries.

PIA UNIFORM 1975-1986

This photo of PIA Air Hostesses was taken in 1975. British dress designer Sir Hardy Amies, best known for being royal dress maker to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom, was responsible for the uniform that came in 1975. The purple and magenta kameezes had embroidered fronts, with green shalwars and pretty printed dupattas inspired by the folk wear of Pakistani village women. Teamed with black bags and smartly styled comfortable black leather sandals, these bright uniforms introduced a cheerful note on board PIA. This uniform design was used from 1975 to 1986PIA cabin crew seen in uniform designed by Sir Hardy Amies in this photo taken at Beijing Airport, China, with airline's Boeing 707-340C in the background. LOST AIRLINES

The aircraft was operating early morning flight from Gilgit to Islamabad. The wreckage of this unlucky Fokker was never found. AP-BBF was carrying a total of 54 people including 5 crew members and 49 passengers. Flight crew included Capt. Ahsan Aftab Bilgrami and Capt. Sohail Zubair - Crew names provided by Umar AnisPIA's AP-BCP photographed by Guido Rome-Fiumicino Airport, Italy in March 1992. Few months later on September 28, 1992, AP-BCP's flying career came to an end on the 'Fan Marker Hill' 9nm south of Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal. The A300 struck hill during final approach to Kathmandu Airport. All 167 people aboard the aircraft died in this accidentOn November 26, 1979, AP-AWZ experienced in-flight cabin fire shortly after take off from Jeddah for a flight to Karachi. After sending mayday call, crew of this ill fated Boeing 707 began taking steps for emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Rapid extension of fire through cabin caused panic among passengers. Soon fire and smoke entered the cockpit, eventually incapacitating flight crew. Nine years old AP-AWZ crashed into rocky mountains near the Saudi city of Taif and burst into flames killing all 156 people on board.

HI JACKING

On March 2, 1981, Pakistan International's flight PK-326 began as a routine domestic hop from Karachi to Peshawar. In midair three heavily armed men seized the plane, diverted it to Kabul, Afghanistan, and demanded the release of 92 "political prisoners" from the Pakistani jails. On March 7, twenty nine hostages including women, children and sick men were released in Kabul. The Boeing 720B sat in Kabul for a week, and when Pakistan's President Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq refused to give in, the hijackers shot a Pakistani diplomat Tariq Rahim in full view of the other passengers and dumped his body onto the tarmacNext, on March 9, the plane flew to Damascus, Syria, and by the time ordeal ended there on March 14, more than 100 hostages had endured 13 days of tension and squalor. At that time it was the longest hijacking episode in the history.
The gunmen repeatedly threatened to blow up the plane, but were talked into long extensions while negotiations continued by radio with Pakistani and Syrian officials in the Damascus control tower. Finally the hijackers said they would settle for just 55 prisoners - but they coupled the concession with a grim warning: they would soon kill the three Americans on board. "Be ready to pick up the bodies," they told the tower. Just twenty minutes before the deadline President Zia gave in, ordering that the prisoners be flown to sanctuary in Libya. "It's over," said Pakistani negotiator Sarfraz Khan. But it wasn't over. First, Pakistani authorities said they could not trace one of the 55 prisoners. And some of the others didn't want to leave Pakistan. Then, when a PIA Boeing 707 carrying the released prisoners was in the air approaching Tripoli, Libya suddenly announced that it had changed it's mind about granting asylum to the hijackers and their friends. The prisoners' plane had nowhere to go, and the hostages' lives were again in jeopardy. Finally Syria announced that it would take in the prisoners and the hijackers, and the gunmen gave up. The long flight was over.

PIA SERVICE

In the first half of the year 1999, PIA acquired five Boeing 747-367 aircraft (initially leased from Cathay Pacific) for its European and North American destinations. In 2002 PIA signed an agreement with Boeing Company for the biggest aircraft deal in the history of PIA. After a dry spell of 10 years, PIA ordered new aircraft - 8 wide-body aircraft from the Boeing 777 family for its long-haul flights. The airline accepted delivery of its first Boeing 777-240ER aircraft at Boeing Field in Seattle, USA, on 29 January, 2004. On 2 November, 2005, PIA signed an agreement with Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) of France to purchase seven brand new ATR 42-500 turbo prop aircraft. These new 48-seater ATRs will replace PIA's ageing fleet of Fokker F-27s on airline's domestic and regional route network. On May 31, 2006, PIA received its first ATR 42-500 in Toulouse, France. The remaining six ATR 42-500s were delivered to the airline between 2006 and 2007.In August 2007, PIA signed a deal with Kuwait's Aviation Lease and Finance Company (ALAFCO) to lease seven new Airbus A320-200 aircraft. The aircraft will replace PIA's Boeing 737-300 fleet which has served the airline for more than twenty years. The deliveries of seven new Airbus A320 aircraft are expected to start in 2009 and be completed in same year. The Airbus A310, Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 are currently the mainstays of PIA's medium- and long-haul operations, with feeder, local and regional services provided by the Boeing 737-300 and ATR 42-500.Life has never been easy for PIA, as the flag carrier of a young and developing nation which has had an eventful history to date, but it is a worthy ambassador for Pakistan and its people. Its services and personnel have helped to make the country more widely known and her people better understood in a large part of the world.PIA was the first non-communist airline to operate flights to the People's Republic of China. In this rare photo from 1964 in Yawar's collection, you can see the arrival of PIA's first flight from China at Dacca Airport, East Pakistan. Yawar's grandfather Capt. Moinuddin Quraishi appears on the right side of this photo. The Chinese delegation was given warm welcome with flower garlands as seen in the photo. PIA Boeing 720B jetliner used for this flight

Pakistan International Airlines

When Pakistan was founded in 1947 it comprised two territories on either side of the expanse of India. It was in this unusual circumstance that Pakistan International was formed. Despite wars and economic trouble, the carrier survived to grow and prosper. Today it maintains a sizeable international route network, in addition to its services closer to home, with a modern and expanding fleetAfter a short period of independence, Pakistan decided in 1951 that it needed a national flag carrier airline; the government of the country accordingly established Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in this role, and on 25 May ordered three examples of the Lockheed L-1049C Super Constellation four-engined airliner as the new operator's initial equipment. PIA flew its first service with the Super Constellation on 07 June 1954 on the route linking Karachi and Dacca (now Dhaka), which were the main cities of the country's western and eastern halves, of which the later is now Bangladesh. On 1 February 1955 the airline flew its first international service, between Karachi and London via Cairo. On 11 March 1955 PIA formally took over the assets and routes of another Pakistani operator, Orient Airways, which had in effect been part of PIA since October 1953. The consolidation of the two airlines meant that PIA could enlarge its domestic network with 11 Douglas DC-3 and two Convair CV-240 aircraft, which left the Super Constellation machines wholly free for international services.Modernization of the fleet used for domestic and regional operations was now a matter of high priority, and in May 1956 the airline placed an order for three examples of the Vickers Viscount 815 four-turboprop airliner, the first of which was accepted in the UK on 2 January 1959 for a debut in revenue earning service on the service linking Karachi and Delhi on 31 January 1959. Further enhancement came in 1961 with debut of the Fokker F-27 Friendship twin-turboprop type, of which the first was received on 3 January 1961. The availability of the F-27 for operation on the routes linking the major Pakistani cities freed the DC-3 fleet for use on new services to the remoter parts of East Pakistan.PIA was the first Asian airline with pure-jet aircraft, in the form of a Boeing 707-321 machine leased from Pan American World Airways for use from 7 March 1960 on the London service that was extended to New York on 5 May 1961. On 21 December 1961 PIA began to receive its own jet aircraft when it took delivery of the first of three Boeing 720-040B aircraft, whose availability permitted the operator to enlarge its international route network.n 1963 PIA called off its New York service, but on 29 April 1964 became the first non-communist airline to operate a service to the Chinese city of Shanghai. A notable feature of PIA's domestic routes in East Pakistan for some time was the helicopter services operated with Sikorsky S-61N's. PIA ordered four examples of the Hawker Siddeley HS.121 Trident 1E to replace Vickers Viscount 815s. First of these four Trident aircraft was accepted on 1 March 1966. The Trident aircraft were later sold to the Civil Aviation Administration of China in 1970. In 1971 East Pakistan secured its independence as Bangladesh, and PIA ceased operations to that country. The airline's fleet and network were both reduced, but the service to New York was resumed in 1972.
